Visit Topeka Black History Exhibit

Topeka, the capital city of Kansas, has a rich history that dates back to the mid-19th century. During this time, Topeka played a vital role in the fight against slavery and became a beacon of hope for many African Americans seeking freedom and equality.

The early African-American settlers in Topeka faced numerous challenges but displayed resilience and determination. Many came to escape the horrors of slavery in southern states, seeking a haven to enjoy freedom and build a better life for themselves and their families.

Upon arriving in Topeka, African Americans established vibrant communities and actively participated in the city’s growth. They contributed to various sectors, including education, politics, business, and the arts, leaving an indelible mark on Topeka’s cultural landscape. Through stories, photographs and artifacts, this traveling exhibition aims to comprehensively understand African American history in Topeka beyond the case and its relevance to the Brown v. Board decision.
